OK, so you love the thought of being hailed a hero with the music you play, where women fall at your feet, people come from miles around just to hear your set? Wow, sounds good to me, but… Where do you start?
- Where do you learn to mix?
- Where do you buy lots of good music and…
- Where do you start looking to find the equipment you will need?
Lots of questions and you will find many different answers on the internet. “So where should I start” I hear you say? OK, listen up! I will only say this once, ha, but a few questions to ask you first…
- Do you LOVE music?
- Do you spend loads of money on the latest albums, singles, music magazines and remixes?
- Do your neighbours hate you ?
- Do you follow DJ’s around (yes we know stalking is illegal, but respect is good!)
So you think you have a passion for music and you really want to know how to break into being a DJ? Some people get lucky, but most just get out there, work hard and network!
There are plenty of sites online that offer gimmicks – seemingly good deals which end up not actually offering you anything useful – we are not one of those sites, what you see, is what you get with us. Here at EMCO publishers we have been approached by several DJ’s asking if we could make films of their work to promote their skills and help them network.
We now know there is a huge market and thirst for this information and have decided to expand on these films and develop information products to help up and coming DJ’s. ‘How to be a DJ’ is the first DVD that EMCO have produced in this arena. There are two more in production and they will be released early in 2011.
This first DVD is an introduction into DJ’ing and if you still have a thirst and desire to become one, then the second and third will give you all the knowledge you need to follow your dream. All you will have to do is practice, practice, practice. Oh and practice!
Each DVD will show and explain the equipment you will need according to your budget. In the majority of modern venues, they will have the equipment to allow you to take your own laptop and ‘plug and play’. However you may only want to work in a nightclub, in this case they will generally have their own equipment and we will show you how to use this as well. We will discuss this at length with the help of two DJ’s that have 30 years of experience between them, one of which was the runner up at the “King of the decks” 2010 competition.
So back to your first question. “Where do I start?”I would suggest you try the ‘How to be a DJ’ DVD and watch a professional DJ of 20 years, Rob aka ‘Freejak’, work his magic in his studio just for you. He will give you advice on cost and equipment and also show you some production techniques that he uses to make his own remixes. ‘Freejak’ will show you how to do basic mixing on cheap decks, so you can see how it is done right from the start; from there you can only get better!
Here is a clip from the dvd of Rob aka freejak, doing a quick remix of a classic im sure you will all recognize:
